Basic Knowledge of Disaster Prevention Information

This page provides information you can use to protect yourself from a disaster caused by a storm surge.

Pay Attention to Disaster and Weather Information!

【Disaster Prevention and Weather Information Announced by the Government】
In the event of imminent danger of a storm surge disaster, the Japan Meteorological Agency will issue a storm surge advisory, a storm surge warning, and/or a special storm surge warning.
【Storm Surge Advisory】
When a storm surge warning is issued, check your closest evacuation shelter and check your emergency kit.
Check your evacuation shelter on the hazard map issued by the municipality where you live.
If you are an elderly person or have an elderly family member, begin your evacuation to a safe place.
When a storm surge advisory is issued, check the area where the disaster is expected, your evacuation destination, and your evacuation route using the hazard map, and the like. Also, if there is a high possibility that the storm surge advisory could be switched to a storm surge warning, while considering any orders from your local municipality to prepare for evacuation or for elderly persons to begin evacuating, if you are an elderly person then refer to your Hazard Map to make decisions regarding evacuation.
【Storm Surge Warning and Special Storm Surge Warning】
A surge warning and special surge warning is the standard by which the municipality where you live issues an Evacuation Advisory or Evacuation Order.
As soon as the municipality where you live issues an Evacuation Advisory or Evacuation Order, begin to evacuate to a safe place immediately.
In areas where a disaster is assumed, consider the evacuation advisory issued by your municipality, and make your own evacuation judgment while referencing the hazard map and the like even if the evacuation advisory has not been issued.

Pay Attention to Evacuation Information From Your Municipality!

The municipality where you live will announce evacuation information when there is imminent danger of a storm surge disaster.

As soon as an Evacuation Advisory or Evacuation Order is issued, begin your evacuation to a safe place (an evacuation shelter) immediately.
Evacuate to a nearby building that is 3 stories or higher if it is difficult to move far at night.
If you are unable to get out, move to the second floor or higher area of your home to ensure your safety.
An Evacuation Advisory or Evacuation Order may not always be issued. In case of imminent danger, begin your evacuation before an Evacuation Advisory or Evacuation Order is issued.

When the preparation for evacuation or a start of evacuation of elderly people and others is announced, the elderly, people who are physically challenged, infants, and their caregivers will their evacuation preparations.
